Ancillary fees have been the lifeline of many airlines in the wake of the recession and fluctuating oil prices. One such ancillary fee, which is becoming increasingly popular among airlines, is the charge for checked baggage. There are no common guidelines among airlines concerning these fees, making it even more difficult for travel managers and travelers to decipher the true cost of their flight.
In the April edition of In Motion, BCD Travel brought you a comprehensive listing of baggage rules by more than two dozen carriers in order to help you gain perspective on the total cost of a trip. Due to popular reader demand, this chart has now been updated to reflect the latest baggage fees charged by airlines.
The chart presents airlines’ set weight limits for individual bags (depending on class and destination) and fees charged for overweight luggage. However, rules do differ widely between carriers; some offer complimentary checking of first bags, others charge a fee for every checked-bag and some airlines have complicated baggage rules based on weight, size and number of pieces. BCD Travel’s guide to airline baggage fees will help you navigate these rules.
